“Collingwood’s by-law was enacted in 2002, and we strengthened it in 2005 to include public playing fields. It was primarily enforcement by the Health Unit Tobacco Inspector. Our by-law provides a distance of 25 meters from public playing fields where most by-laws range between 9 and 10 meters. The additional space not only supports clean air to breath, but helps to prevent the perception that smoking is a social norm. Almost all folks have complied with the no-smoking “please we play here” signage. It was the right public policy then and still is today. What a great pleasure to work with our friends from the Health Unit, much of our accomplishments is due to their committed efforts.”

“We were concerned with smoking near our children. The by-law was enacted to protect the children. To date we have had no problems with compliance or enforcement.”
